As Styled By - Hatching Our Home

We spoke with Winnie Packer of Hatching Our Home about her latest project - a softly layered bedroom designed for her daughter. Rooted in warmth, whimsy, and a sense of calm, the space reflects her thoughtful approach to creating a home that nurtures and evolves over time. Here, Winnie shares the inspiration, process, and meaningful details behind the room.

What was your vision for your daughter’s room, and what kind of feeling did you hope to create for her?

We really wanted her room to feel soft and gentle. A space that felt calm the moment you walked in. Something a little bit whimsical, magical, unique to her but still timeless. We also kept on coming back to the idea of creating a room that felt nurturing and peaceful, especially in this busy season of life with little ones. A place where she can rest, play and grow!

What drew you to the Evie in oak for the space, and how did it fit into your overall design vision?

We were instantly drawn to the warmth of the beautiful oak!  It feels so natural and grounding, which was exactly what we wanted for the space. The Evie Bedside has such a beautiful and fun classic shape which sits really softly within the room. We found a timber marketplace bed that we sanded down and tried to match the timber as close as possible to the gorgeous colour of the Evie. It truly just brought everything together in a really effortless way.

What were some of the key elements that helped bring the room together - such as wallpaper, textiles, or decorative details?

The wallpaper and moulding are definitely the heart of the room - it sets the tone for everything else. From there, we layered in soft linens, light textures and a few meaningful pieces (like the Evie bedside) to make it feel personal to her. We tried to keep everything quite tonal and cohesive so it all felt calm while still holding a sense of whimsy.

Do you have a favourite detail in the room that you feel really brings it all together?

I love the little corner around her bed. The way the oak tones sit against the wallpaper and moulding with the softness of the bedding and canopy, it just feels really settled and calm. We love cuddling up and reading her stories here, it is so cosy.

What was one of the most challenging aspects of the renovation or styling process?

Probably just slowing down and not rushing decisions. It’s easy to want everything finished quickly, especially with kids, but I’ve learnt that the spaces I love most are the ones that evolve over time. It took us quite a while to pick the right wallpaper. My mum actually grew up with Laura Ashley wallpaper in her bedroom, so to be able to go full circle with my own daughter and use one of the classic Laura Ashley prints makes it feel all the more bit magical.  Letting it come together slowly was definitely a challenge, but also really worth it.

Where do you tend to find inspiration when designing spaces in your home?

We have always been drawn to nature, soft colours, natural materials and light. I also love older homes and spaces that feel lived in and layered over time.

Our first Reno and home was a little old Fisherman's cottage by the sea, so I found it easy to draw inspiration from our surroundings and the history associated with the home. This time around with Reno number 2, we are really creating the character from scratch which I both love and find hard. We try not to follow trends too closely and instead focus on what we love, feels calm and meaningful for our family and home!

Do you have any advice for parents designing a room that feels both beautiful and practical for their children?

Start with a simple, timeless base and build from there. Things don’t need to be overly complicated to feel beautiful and kids will always love what you choose for them (bonus point if you let them be a part of the decision/ reno process.. our son still talks about how daddy put up his wallpaper!) Choosing pieces that are both functional and yet feel special also makes such a difference, especially in a space you’re using every day. Kids rooms are so much fun to design and having elements that you have handmade/ collected make them even more magical.

And finally, what projects or spaces are you currently working on or dreaming up next?

We’re just starting to bring all the final pieces of our master bedroom together, which we are so excited about. It’s a slower process for us at the moment with lots going on, but I think that’s part of what makes it feel special!  Our kids bathroom is about to be tiled too, so that will be fun to pull together in its final stages. Even when a room or space is “finished”, I still love adding/ moving things around to make them feel even cosier, loved and more like us as time goes by.

Watch this space!! xx
